Jenna Chambers
Hello, my name is Jenna Chambers.
I just graduated from Central High School this year and was involved in the band as a drum major, as well as a member of principal’s cabinet. I joined Principal’s Cabinet as a way to represent the band along with some others in an organization that was to make decisions for the school. A lot of what we discussed was transitioning middle school and intermediate school mascots to our high school mascots. The cabinet didn’t discuss heavier subjects very often. It was sort of a way to connect new administration with students.
I have taken a lot of time during this quarantine to reflect on my level of support towards minorities and making all feel included. Change is never comfortable. And I have faced the uncomfortable truth that I have not done enough. I haven’t called people out when something offensive was said. I have had short comings and I have been a bystander. It is something I’m not proud of but it is something I have changed through reflection and educating myself.
I want Central High School to be a place where people of all sexualities, gender identifications, races, ethnicities, religions, and abilities, can form a community and work with each other.
With some self awareness and accountability we can all change for the better. This page has given minorities a voice. Although I can’t pretend to understand what it is like to go through some of the things I have read, I am absolutely repulsed and even more disgusted that this could go on with no attention from myself, peers, and administration. I do not wish to speak over your voices and I cannot pretend to have always been the perfect ally, but I am working to understand and support you and I encourage everybody to open up their hearts and know that shortcomings and failures of the past don’t define a change you can make today.
